Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us

by Megan M. on October 22, 2008 · 7 comments (Blog) |

You’re a leader.

We need you.

I am properly ensconced in my warm blanket with fresh ginger tea, and (appropriately) I will share with you my soul-swelling experience with Seth Godin’s book, which is all about Tribes.

Sometimes you find your path, and discover that the universe is leading you. It starts out by dropping hints. If you pick up the right hints, move in the right direction (and listen to the gentle, whispered suggestions of your unconscious), it starts to drop resources. And people. And whole, perfectly-conducted experiences designed to propel you forward faster. Like bombs, but full of AWESOME.

Sure, sounds loopy. And it’s happening to me.

The Story of B was one of these bombs. So was Shiva Nata—an answer in a freaking dream, so clear that I couldn’t ignore it. And Tribes is one of them, too. By the time I finished the book, I was 200% certain that this is where I’m going, and the right place for me to be.

I’ve been reading a lot of great books lately, but Tribes is the one that made me cry. So I’m going to tell you what I learned. And then you can go read it, too.

But it’s going to take me awhile. I have a LOT of notes.

You might want to just pick it up and read it cover to cover while you’re waiting for my next post.

Yes. That’s what you want to do.

Tribes is also full of ‘ding’ moments for me. Every time I read one of them I feel like I’m leveling up in World of Warcraft, momentarily surrounded by a golden glow of awesomeness.

And this one I wanted to tattoo, mirrored, on my boss’s head so he’d see it every time he looked in the mirror: “Leaders have followers. Managers have employees.” I don’t think he’d get it though. He’s definitely getting my copy of Tribes once I’ve absorbed it all properly and thoroughly.

I’m excited to talk to you about this! I’m only 1/3 of the way through Tribes, but I’m already excited! (:

Barry—YES!! It’s like WoW!! I use “leveling up” as a metaphor all over the place but I hadn’t thought of it this way. It’s like being pulled towards your destiny.

Awesome Megan! Thanks for inspiring me on a day that could have gone over to the dark side!

@Pace – I hope we can soon! I believe the phrase I used was: “cracked open the top of my head and flooded the room with light”. It’s a doozy.

@Trish – Boy, I know that feeling. Sending you vibes of crazy awesome!!

I walked in and gave my second copy to my boss.

The great news is that this is a small, 150-page book. You can read it in an afternoon, then spend the next day going back to re-read all the pages you bookmarked, dog-eared, or highlighted.

Then get out there and start leading!
