Personal Responsibility, Part No. 23,502

by Megan M. on December 30, 2008 · View Comments (Blog) | email me

If you’re going to make one person the focus of your dreams and expectations, that person should be you.

It shouldn’t be a record executive, or a talent scout, or a person in a position of authority that seems to have some kind of power to mete out success. It shouldn’t be your favorite author or the head honcho in your networking group (or government, or religion). None of these people are responsible for the direction your life takes, even if they seem to have some effect. (Even if that effect seems gigantic.) Giving them that responsibility does a disservice to them and to you.

You’re the person with direct control over your life. If you want something, you should take responsibility for getting yourself there. Blaming others for failing to magically teleport you where you want to be is childish and ineffective and unfair. Don’t wait to be discovered. Don’t hope that some government or religious organization will solve your life puzzles for you.

Step up and get it done yourself.

  • Agreed!
  • Totally agree, I think the further points are around family and friends that you make the arbiter of your happiness, be that your spouse or your children, or just a friend you live vicariously through. You have to do the living.
  • Man, I'm with you there.
  • Nick
    Thank you. ^^
  • Thank you.
  • Excellent points, Meg. Thanks for blogging about it.
